Winston Churchill as orator and wordsmith

Published: Tuesday, 24th November 2015

OnTable set for lunch in the Great Hall Saturday 14 November, Ditchley hosted another in its series of fundraising events in support of the Fabric Fund.

On this occasion lunch followed a talk by Lord Hennessy, Attlee Professor of Contemporary British History, broadcaster, author and Member of the Foundation's Council of Management, on the subject "Winston Churchill as orator and wordsmith". Full of wit and colour, we are delighted that he has very kindly allowed us to reproduce the transcript in full. Click here to download a pdf version.

After Lord Hennessy's talk, guests enjoyed a convivial lunch seated in Ditchley's Great Hall and Saloon, followed by coffee in front of a roaring fire in the White Drawing Room. We were very grateful to all those who supported this event which was a wonderful occasion, providing a brief respite from the tempestuous weather outside, and the news emerging of the terrible events in Paris of the night before.
