UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres delivers a troubling message

Published: Tuesday, 28th July 2015

We were delighted to welcome UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres to Ditchley Park on Saturday 11 July to deliver the 51st Annual Lecture.  He spoke without written notes on the subject of ‘Global conflicts and human displacement: 21st Century challenges' leaving his audience in no doubts of the magnitude of the crisis for refugees and other displaced persons, as well as for the countries in which they found themselves.

Those assembled learnt that, according to UNHCR figures, at the end of 2014, there were 59.5 million people displaced by conflict in the world, with a further 42,500 added to that number every day. Troubling though this was, they also heard that the financial capacity of governments, multilateral agencies and NGOs to cope with even the most basic of needs of this mass of humanity was diminishing, as was the international community’s ability to resolve the conflicts creating these needs in the first place.

The lecture was filmed in full and may be viewed here or a full transcript of High Commissioner António Guterres’ lecture can be found here.
